Clinical commentary 臨床

Structurally this is Yukmijihwang-won — prepared rehmannia, moutan bark, poria, cornus and Chinese yam, with alisma left out — set inside a Qi tonic of ginseng, astragalus, atractylodes and licorice, and finished with the schisandra-and-ophiopogon pair that the corpus uses for a Lung burnt dry. It supplements in three directions at once because the patient it is written for is losing substance in three ways: pus, fever and thirst. 肺癰 with 咳吐膿血 and 發熱作渴 is a lung abscess, bronchiectasis or an empyema, and this is the formula for the depleted end of it — the patient who cannot afford another cooling, draining prescription. **Purulent bloody sputum with fever needs chest imaging, sputum culture and antibiotics, and often drainage; a tonic formula does not treat the infection.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
