Moutan Bark Decoction

Mokdanpi-tang

한글 목단피탕  ·  Pinyin Mu Dan Pi Tang

牡丹皮湯

The Bogam carries two formulas called 牡丹皮湯; this is the 癰疽門 one, and the 婦人門 formula for 室女經閉 is registered as mokdanpi-tang. The transcription prints 肺癕 for 肺癰 and 胷乳間 for 胸乳間, normalized here, and sets the dose as 甘草生 各一錢三分 with a space after 生 — read as 甘草(生), raw licorice, at the shared dose of 1 don 3 fun.

Clinical commentary 臨床

A blood-cooling formula for a suppuration of the Lung: moutan bark, red peony and sanguisorba against the bleeding and the heat in the vessels, with platycodon and coix seed to carry the pus out and cimicifuga to lift the whole upward into the chest. Raw rather than honey-fried licorice, because the formula is cooling rather than building. Its indication is the clearest statement of 肺癰 in the chapter — 口吐膿血, pus and blood brought up from the mouth, with 氣作腥臭, breath gone foul and rank. Taken together those two signs read straightforwardly as a lung abscess, bronchiectasis or an empyema; foul sputum in particular points to anaerobic infection. **Foul purulent sputum with chest pain needs chest imaging, sputum culture and antibiotics, and a collection usually needs drainage.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
