Dusk Decoction

Hwanghon-tang

한글 황혼탕  ·  Pinyin Huang Hun Tang

黃昏湯

治同上 refers back to Wiyeop-tang above, so the indication is lung abscess. The leaf glosses its own drug name: 夜合樹皮 is 合歡皮, mimosa tree bark, registered as haphwanpi. 一掌大, a palm's breadth, is a sheet measure of bark and is left without a gram figure.

治同上. 夜合樹皮一掌大, 水煎服. 卽合歡皮也. 《本草》

Translation

Treats the same as the above. Bark of the night-closing tree, a palm's breadth of it, decocted in water and taken. This is mimosa tree bark. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A one-drug formula, and the name is a pun rather than a claim: 黃昏 is dusk, the hour at which the 夜合樹, the night-closing tree, folds its leaves. Mimosa bark is the Bencao's drug for 續筋骨 and for dissipating swelling, and it is set here against a suppuration that the heavier formulas are also being used on. Its place in the sequence is as a simple to fall back on when the eight-and-ten-drug decoctions are out of reach — the Bogam often parks one of these at the end of a run of compound formulas. **Lung abscess needs antibiotic treatment and often drainage; a single bark decoction is a historical record, not a treatment for it.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
