Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺癰嘔膿. 南星(炮) 一錢, 射干ㆍ桔梗ㆍ天門冬ㆍ薄荷ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ杏仁ㆍ半夏ㆍ防風各七分半, 知母ㆍ貝母ㆍ阿膠ㆍ川芎ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ白芨ㆍ白芷ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑七片ㆍ烏梅一箇, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats lung abscess with the retching up of pus. Roasted arisaema, 1 don; belamcanda, platycodon, asparagus root, mint, perilla leaf, apricot kernel, pinellia and siler, 7 fun 5 ri each; anemarrhena, fritillaria, ass-hide gelatin, cnidium, dried rehmannia, mulberry root bark, bletilla and angelica dahurica, and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add seven slices of ginger and one black plum, decoct in water and take. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Where Gilgyeong-tang drains, this one works on the texture of what is being brought up. Roasted arisaema leads with pinellia behind it, and belamcanda, platycodon and mint open the throat so that the thick matter can come out rather than be retched against. Asparagus root, fritillaria, anemarrhena, gelatin and dried rehmannia replace the fluid the suppuration has burnt off; the black plum at the end gathers the whole in. The indication 嘔膿 — pus brought up by retching — is what an abscess draining into a bronchus looks like. **Arisaema and pinellia are toxic raw and must be properly processed; the leaf specifies the arisaema roasted.
