Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治過食煎炒及酒, 以致喘急不得卧, 及治肺癕. 甜葶藶子(炒)ㆍ瓜蔞仁ㆍ薏苡仁ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ升麻ㆍ葛根ㆍ桔梗各一錢, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats urgent panting with inability to lie down, brought on by excess of fried food and wine, and also treats lung abscess. Dry-fried sweet lepidium seed, trichosanthes seed, coix seed, mulberry root bark, cimicifuga, pueraria and platycodon, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The combination of lepidium seed, trichosanthes, coix and platycodon is the classical lung-abscess prescription — drain the fluid, cut the phlegm, open the lung and let the pus out — and the Bogam treats 肺癰 at length in the 癰疽 chapter with much the same drugs. 甜葶藶子, the sweet kind of lepidium, is the milder of the two varieties and is chosen deliberately here. 不得卧 with a history of rich food and drink is what the chapter means by a repletion panting, and the sweet lepidium at only a don is a gentler diuresis than Pyeongpye-tang's two. **Lung abscess and pneumonia need antibiotic treatment and often drainage.
