Clinical commentary 臨床

咽痒 — an itching throat — is the symptom that names this formula's case: the tickling at the back of the throat that sets off a bout of coughing, which the chapter reads as heat and dryness at the surface of the lung. Aster shoots, coltsfoot and lily are the three standard cough-stopping moisteners, and the glue and typha pollen are there because the cough has been hard enough to bring up blood. 經霜桑葉, mulberry leaves gathered after the first frost, is a real distinction in the materia medica — the frost was held to make them cooler — and the Bogam specifies it whenever the lung is hot. **Contains rhinoceros horn, a protected-species material whose trade is banned under CITES; this must not be prepared. Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
