Clinical commentary 臨床

Fifteen drugs covering qi, blood and lung at once, with bupleurum and lycium root bark for the alternating fever and the night sweats. It is the 陰虛喘 formula for the patient who has gone past breathlessness into wasting, and the indication reads like a case definition: panting cough, purulent and bloody sputum, fever that comes and goes, sweating in sleep. That combination is pulmonary tuberculosis, and it was the commonest cause of the picture the chapter calls 虛勞. **Cough with bloody sputum, fever and night sweats requires investigation for tuberculosis and for cancer; it is not a condition to treat empirically.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
