Clinical commentary 臨床

A moistening formula for the wasted patient, and the beeswax in the name is the whole idea: a piece melted into each dose coats the throat and carries the drugs down slowly. Lily, fritillaria and ophiopogon moisten the lung, ginseng and yam hold the qi, and the glue is there for the blood. 咯膿血 — coughing up pus and blood — in a patient with 虛勞 is pulmonary tuberculosis or bronchiectasis as a modern reader would divide it. **Either needs diagnosis and specific treatment; blood in the sputum is never to be treated empirically.** **Deer antler glue is a protected-species material and must not be prepared; the source's own substitute, donkey-hide glue, is the one to read.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
