Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺虛咳嗽, 喘急, 發熱自汗. 阿膠一錢半, 川芎ㆍ當歸ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ白朮ㆍ五味子ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ人參ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ甘草各七分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑五, 煎服. 《諸方》

Translation

Treats lung vacuity with cough, urgent panting, fever and spontaneous sweating. Donkey-hide glue, 1 don 5 fun; chuanxiong, Chinese angelica, white peony, prepared rehmannia, white atractylodes, schisandra, ophiopogon, ginseng, mulberry root bark, white poria and licorice, 7 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger, decoct and take. — Jebang 諸方 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Samul-tang and Sagunja-tang put together — the standard qi-and-blood pair — with donkey-hide glue leading and schisandra, ophiopogon and mulberry root bark added for the lung. The chapter offers it for 陰虛喘, panting on a vacuous yin, where the breathlessness comes with fever and sweating rather than with phlegm. 發熱自汗 with panting in a chronically ill patient is the picture the Bogam treats by building rather than draining, and the glue at double the weight of everything else is the formula's signature: it is there for the blood and for the dryness at once. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
