Translation

Treats yin vacuity with urgent panting, and phlegm cough. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Sixteen drugs and a formula trying to do two opposite things at once, which is what 陰虛 with phlegm asks of it: rehmannia, asparagus root and ophiopogon to moisten, pinellia and tangerine peel to dry the phlegm, with phellodendron and anemarrhena — the yin-nourishing fire-draining pair — holding the middle. Nearly everything is wine-treated, which was thought to carry the drugs upward to the lung. The difficulty is real and the chapter knows it: 3.11 and 3.12 both insist that a cough with phlegm and a cough from dryness need opposite treatment, and a patient with both is the hardest case in the chapter. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
