Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula for 3.9, coughs and panting that follow an injury, and the Inner Classic passage it answers assigns each kind of accident to an organ: night walking to the kidney, a fall to the liver, a fright to the lung, wading water and tumbling to the kidney and bones. The formula does not follow that scheme at all — it is a qi-moving, phlegm-settling prescription with ginseng in it, which is to say a treatment for the state the patient is in rather than for the theory. Panting and agitation after a fall or a drenching, settled with a warm aromatic formula, is the old treatment for what would now be considered shock or a chest injury. **Breathlessness after a fall needs examination for rib fracture, pneumothorax and lung contusion.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
