Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治室女經閉, 咳嗽發熱. 當歸ㆍ牡丹皮各一錢半, 白芍藥ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ陳皮ㆍ白朮ㆍ香附子各一錢, 川芎ㆍ柴胡ㆍ黃芩各七分, 甘草四分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服之. 《回春》

Translation

Treats an unmarried young woman with the menses closed, coughing and effusing heat. Korean angelica and moutan bark, 1.5 don each; white peony, dried raw rehmannia, tangerine peel, white atractylodes, and cyperus, 1 don each; cnidium, bupleurum, and scutellaria, 7 fun each; licorice 4 fun. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula for the presentation the chapter takes most seriously in a young patient — periods stopped, with cough and fever. Note what it is *not*: none of the breaking pills used elsewhere for a closed cycle. The reasoning is that this cycle has stopped because there is nothing to release, not because something is blocking, and forcing it would take from a body already spending itself. Moutan and scutellaria cool the heat of wasting; the Four Substances rebuild; bupleurum and cyperus course what worry has bound. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
