Translation

Treats lung abscess, engendering the Lung metal, augmenting the Spleen earth and advancing the appetite for food and drink. Ginseng, white atractylodes, Chinese yam, white poria, coix seed, hyacinth bean, platycodon, amomum, lotus seed, round cardamom and licorice, 2 don each; aquilaria, saussurea, frankincense, clove and agastache, 1 don each. Powder them, and give 3 don at a time stirred into a decoction of perilla and salt; a jujube decoction will also do. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is the Spleen formula of the 肺癰 set. The bulk of it is Sagunja-tang widened out with Chinese yam, hyacinth bean, lotus seed, amomum and cardamom — the 參苓白朮散 pattern — and the five aromatics are added on top at a quarter of the weight to move what the tonics would otherwise make stagnant. 生肺金益脾土 is the stated mechanism: build the earth and the metal is engendered by it. It belongs to the stage after the pus is draining, when the patient has stopped eating and is wasting. A chronic suppurative lung disease does hollow out nutrition that way, and feeding the patient is a real part of recovery — but **the suppuration itself needs antibiotic treatment and often drainage, which no amount of Spleen support replaces.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
