Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺癰吐膿血, 久不愈, 脾弱不食. 此藥能補脾生肺. 黃芪二錢, 人參ㆍ白朮各一錢半, 陳皮ㆍ當歸ㆍ白茯苓各一錢, 麥門冬七分, 桔梗六分, 甘草五分, 五味子四分, 升麻三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats lung abscess bringing up pus and blood which has long failed to heal, with a weak Spleen and no appetite for food. This drug is able to supplement the Spleen and so engender the Lung. Astragalus, 2 don; ginseng and white atractylodes, 1 don 5 fun each; tangerine peel, Korean angelica and white poria, 1 don each; ophiopogon, 7 fun; platycodon, 6 fun; licorice, 5 fun; schisandra, 4 fun; cimicifuga, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Bojungikgi-tang rebuilt for a chest that is still draining: astragalus, ginseng, atractylodes, tangerine peel, Korean angelica, licorice and cimicifuga are the Dongwon skeleton, with poria added and the bupleurum traded for platycodon so that the lifting goes to the Lung rather than the flanks, and schisandra and ophiopogon put back what the suppuration has burnt off. The leaf states its own logic plainly — 補脾生肺, supplement the Spleen and the Lung is engendered, the mother nourishing the child. It is the companion of Ohyangbaekchul-san: both are for the stage when the abscess has gone chronic and the patient is not eating. 肺癰 bringing up pus and blood for a long time without healing is a chronic lung abscess or bronchiectasis. **A suppuration that has not healed over weeks needs imaging, culture and antibiotic treatment, and often surgical drainage.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
