Purple Gold Lozenge

Jageumjeongja

한글 자금정자 · Pinyin Zi Jin Ding Zi

紫金錠子

The lozenge has no composition of its own here: the Worm chapter gives it as two case records and refers the formula to the Resolving Toxins chapter, where it stands as 萬病解毒丹. The transcription reads 爲尸蟲所齒售 and carries a collation note 齒售 : 嚙磨 at the foot of the leaf. 齒售 will not construe, so the first-edition reading 嚙磨 — gnawed and ground — is printed. The Abscesses chapter (癰疽 下, jap8 leaf 009b) sets up a leaf of its own under the shorter name 紫金錠, again with 方見解毒 for the composition; its indications and dosing are gathered here rather than registered twice, as the Spectral Affliction chapter's material already is. That chapter cites the lozenge three times — at 1.10.2 among the general treatments, at 1.10.6 for the toxin entering the heart under the name 萬病解毒丹, and at 1.10.8 for the clove arising from eating the flesh of beasts dead of plague — and all three point here. The composition the leaf's 方見解毒 points at stands in the Resolving Toxins chapter at 2.1.5 020a, where the formula is headed 太乙紫金丹 with 一名紫金錠 and 一名萬病解毒丹 in its first line, and it is now registered there as taeeuljageum-dan; this entry stays a cross-reference entry, as the Worm chapter's leaf makes it.

Translation

Treats corpse-transmitted taxation consumption. ○ A woman long afflicted with taxation consumption, gnawed and ground at by the corpse worms, was sold a single lozenge and took it; at once she vomited and voided more than ten small worms. Afterwards she took Storax Pill for half a month and was as usual. This medicine has been given widely in consumptive disease and has never failed. — Immun 入門 ○ In one household five brothers all suffered corpse-transmitted taxation, and three had already died. A travelling practitioner instructed them to take the Purple Gold Lozenge; each took one, one voided a foul matter like pus and one voided dead worms, and both recovered. — Uigam 醫鑑 ○ Treats contracting a ghost evil and forming a ghost pregnancy: half a lozenge to a whole one, dissolved and taken down in warm wine. ○ A woman had intercourse with a bewitching spirit and a glomus formed in her abdomen; she took this medicine and malign matter came away with it. The evil came again, so she took half a lozenge more and burnt three lozenges besides, until the medicine's vapour filled the room, and the evil came no more. — Immun 入門 ○ Another name for it is Mambyeong Haedok-dan, the Cure-All Resolve Toxin Elixir. formula in the Resolving Toxins chapter ○ Treats abscess, the eruption on the back, swellings and growths of every kind, the clove sore, the malign sore and all swelling toxins — the formula is given in the Resolving Toxins chapter. Take half a lozenge each time, dissolved and sent down in weak wine, a whole one in the grave case; and outwardly stir it with cold water and spread it on the affected place, several times a day, with immediate effect. Only where it has already burst and the pus and blood have come out is it not to be given. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Chung, Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two case records in place of a prescription, and they are worth reading as the chapter's own evidence. 一家兄弟五人幷患傳尸勞, 已死者三人 — five brothers in one household all sick with corpse-transmitted taxation and three already dead. A wasting, coughing illness that takes most of a household is tuberculosis, and 傳尸, corpse-transmission, is a precise term for how it spread: the Bogam held it to pass from the dying to those who nursed them. What the patients voided was not worms. The chapter's whole framework for this disease requires a creature to expel, so the 惡物如膿狀, foul matter like pus, and the small bodies in the vomit were read as the parasite leaving. The treatment itself is the Resolving Toxins chapter's lozenge and carries its cautions; nothing in it treats tuberculosis. 惟已潰出膿血者忌服 — not to be given once it has burst and the pus has come away. The Immun is drawing a real line, and it is the same one the Abscesses chapter draws at 1.15's 如有膿水, 亦不可灸: before a collection has formed there is something to be dispersed, and after it has opened the treatment is drainage and dressing. Where the chapter puts this lozenge to work — 疔毒入心, the small black sore with collapse coming on — is the one situation in which nothing it had could have helped. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
