返魂丹

The name 返魂丹 also stands in the index list at 婦人 1.38, among the birth-hastening formulas, where it is a different prescription that the corpus does not register; that occurrence is deliberately left unlinked and must not be pointed here. 褁 is left as the transcription prints it and 䓗 is given as 葱, the corpus form; the collation note 䓗 : 葱 at the page boundary below this leaf annotates its own 䓗白 and 䓗內, and records the first edition's reading as 葱. 一字 is a quarter of a 錢 and is entered as 1 g. The euryale seed that gives the pill its size and the hot wine that carries it down are method rather than ingredients. The 蝸牛 is given 不拘多少, any amount, so it carries no weight.

Translation

Treats the thirteen kinds of clove sore in their dangerous and malignant forms. Realgar and alum calcined to dryness, 2 don each; cinnabar and chalcanthite, 1 don 5 fun each; toad venom, dragon's blood resin and verdigris, 1 don each; calomel, myrrh and frankincense, 5 fun each; musk a quarter don; live snails, any amount. Powder the above, and grind the snails with the toad venom to a paste to bind pills the size of a euryale seed. One pill to a dose: have the patient first chew about 3 inches of scallion white and put it in the palm of the hand, wrap the pill inside the scallion, and send it down with a cupful of hot wine; then let him lie in a warm place, and sweating is the measure of effect. ○ The Inner Classic says, sweat it and the sore is finished — for this drug is able to turn the toxin into sweat. — Seojuk 瑞竹 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same family as 淵然眞人奪命丹 and 賽命丹 in the upper part of the chapter, and built to the same plan: a mineral-and-animal attacking pill whose aim is not to cool or to drain but to force a sweat. The leaf says so outright, quoting the Inner Classic — 汗之則瘡已, sweat it and the sore is finished — and adding that the drug turns the toxin into sweat. Everything about the administration serves that: one pill only, wrapped in a chewed length of scallion white, sent down with hot wine, the patient then laid in a warm place and covered. Realgar and calcined alum lead by weight, with cinnabar and chalcanthite behind them, then toad venom, dragon's blood resin and verdigris, and calomel, myrrh and frankincense in half-don amounts; musk closes the list at a quarter don and live snails ground with the toad venom do the work of a binder. Counting the thirteen kinds of 疔 is a classification the chapter takes from the 入門 and repeats whenever a formula claims to cover the whole class. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulphide; cinnabar and calomel, which are mercury compounds; chalcanthite and verdigris, which are copper salts; and toad venom, whose bufadienolides act on the sodium-potassium pump exactly as digoxin does and have killed people at ordinary doses. Musk is CITES-protected. Hot wine and a deliberately induced sweat speed absorption of all of it. This must not be prepared, and no substitution makes it safe.** A clove sore spreading on the face, or any rapidly advancing deep infection, needs antibiotics and surgical assessment without delay. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
