Bone-Setting Powder

Jeopgol-san

한글 접골산  ·  Pinyin Jie Gu San

接骨散

The leaf carries two prescriptions: the 丹心 powder and, after the ○, the 入門 variant which the text names 接骨丹 — the same drugs without the vinegar cooking, melted into beeswax pills the size of a bullet. That name is taken here as a 一名 within 接骨散 and is not registered again, since it has no leaf of its own. A different 接骨丹 stands in this same 骨折筋斷傷 section at 009a, a 回春 resin plaster, and is registered separately as `jeopgol-dan`; the two share only the name. 黃蠟 and 溫 are printed with the standard glyphs for the transcription's 黄 and 温; 煆 is left as both the transcription and the corpus print it.

Translation

Treats broken bone. Frankincense and myrrh, 2 don 5 fun each; pyrite (calcined and quenched, then ground separately) 5 don; talc 1 nyang; dragon bone and red halloysite, 1 don 5 fun each; a little musk. Powder the above, steep and soak them in good vinegar, boil them dry, dry-fry them crisp and powder them again; at bedtime, at the moment of taking, work the musk in evenly and send 1 don down stirred into warm wine. If the bone has already knitted, leave out the dragon bone and the red halloysite and take it so — extremely effective. — Dansim 丹心 ○ In another prescription the drugs are taken without the musk, steeped in wine, boiled dry and powdered; 5 don of beeswax is melted, the musk is then worked in evenly, and pills the size of a bullet are made. One pill at a time is boiled in wine, stirred apart with a willow twig from the southeast side of the tree and taken hot on an empty stomach. It is called Jeokgol-dan. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The plainest of the chapter's bone-setting powders, and the one whose logic is easiest to read: frankincense and myrrh to move the Blood and settle pain, pyrite as the bone drug, and then three minerals — talc, dragon bone and red halloysite — that the tradition reads as settling and binding. The instruction to drop dragon bone and red halloysite once the bone has knitted is unusually specific, and shows the compiler thought of them as doing something during the knitting rather than afterwards. Whether a mineral or a fossil swallowed could affect a fracture is worth answering plainly: it could not. Dragon bone is fossil bone, mostly calcium carbonate and phosphate, and red halloysite and talc are aluminosilicates. Giving bone to mend bone is sympathetic reasoning, and fracture healing in a fed person is not limited by calcium in the gut. What decides the outcome is reduction and immobilisation, and this chapter does describe that — the 夾骨法, the splinting method, is the leaf in it that actually works. **Contains musk (麝香), from a CITES-protected animal, which must not be sourced.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
