Translation

Treats injury from a fall or a beating with sinew and bone broken and static blood knotted and painful. Vitex leaf (schizonepeta in its place if there is none), vitex fruit, angelica dahurica, asarum, saposhnikovia, cnidium, cinnamon bark, clove bark and notopterygium, 1 nyang each. Make a coarse powder of the above; to each nyang add a spoonful of salt, five stalks of scallion white with the rootlets left on and 5 seung of fermented millet water, boil it up seven times, and pour it over the painful place, renewing it when it goes cold. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The bone-setting group's one external member. Nine aromatic and wind-dispelling drugs are coarsely powdered and boiled up with salt, whole scallion and fermented millet water, and the hot liquid is poured over the painful place and renewed as it cools. The drugs are the chapter's usual surface-opening set — vitex leaf and fruit, angelica dahurica, asarum, saposhnikovia, notopterygium — with cinnamon bark and clove bark for warmth. As a treatment this is a hot aromatic soak, and that is close to the limit of what it can be. A warm soak over a bruise or a closed fracture eases pain and stiffness for as long as it is on; nothing named here crosses intact skin in a quantity that reaches the injured bone. The one real caution is the opposite of the usual one: over broken skin or an open fracture, a non-sterile herbal wash made with fermented water is a route for infection, and an open fracture needs irrigation, antibiotics and surgical debridement rather than a poultice. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
