降眞香 and 往來 are printed with the standard glyphs for the transcription's 真 and 来. The two collation notes 真 : 眞 and 来 : 來 stand at the page break inside the 蔓荊散 leaf on the following page, but the characters they annotate are in this leaf, and both are pure glyph variants. 降眞香 has no entry in the herb list and is left out of the ingredients; the leaf's own gloss gives 紫檀, red sandalwood, as its substitute. 松明節 is resolved to the 松節 entry, pine knot, which is the same material taken for its resin. 蘇木 is printed for the transcription's 蘓木; 煆 is left as both the transcription and the corpus print it.

Translation

Treats a blow or a crush with sinew and bone broken and injured. Frankincense, myrrh, sappanwood, rosewood (red sandalwood in its place if there is none), aconite root, the resinous pine knot and pyrite (calcined in the fire and quenched in vinegar seven times), 5 don each; earthworm (fried in oil), raw dragon bone and leech (fried in oil until charred), 2 don 5 fun each; dragon's blood 1 don 5 fun; five mole crickets (steeped in oil and baked). Powder the above and send 5 don down at a time stirred into good wine. From the crown of the head it searches the disease out downward, down to both hands and both feet and round the whole body; the patient himself feels the force of the drug coming and going in waves, and where it meets the diseased place there is a rushing sound. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's most elaborate bone-setting powder, and the only one that describes what the patient is supposed to feel. Resins and heartwoods — frankincense, myrrh, sappanwood, rosewood — carry the Blood-moving claim, pyrite and the resinous pine knot the bone claim, and then four creature drugs are added for their power to burrow: earthworm, leech, mole cricket and dragon bone. The passage about the force descending from the crown of the head to the hands and feet, hissing when it reaches the injury, is the formula's selling point rather than its pharmacology. Taken honestly, nothing swallowed here reaches a fracture. Pyrite is iron disulfide; calcined and vinegar-quenched it becomes a fine iron oxide powder, and iron in the gut has no bearing on callus formation. The useful parts of fracture care in this chapter are mechanical, and the chapter has them: reduction while the injury is fresh and splinting to hold it, which the 夾骨法 leaf sets out. **Contains aconite (川烏) in quantity and leech (水蛭) as an internal drug. Aconite is cardiotoxic at ordinary doses, and the patient this formula describes may be bleeding into the tissues, where an anticoagulant animal drug and a litre of wine are the last things wanted. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
