Bone-Joining Elixir

Jeopgol-dan

接骨丹

Two different prescriptions are called 接骨丹 inside 1.7 骨折筋斷傷. This is the 回春 resin plaster at 009a, the one the section prose lists among the external applications, and it takes the bare id. The other is at 010a, a beeswax pill introduced with 名曰接骨丹 as a variant inside the 接骨散 leaf; it is treated as a 一名 of 接骨散 rather than as a second registration. 黃香 is glossed in the base text as 松脂 and is entered under songji. 古文錢 (old copper coin, fire-calcined and vinegar-quenched seven times) has no herb id in the corpus and is not in the ingredient list.

Translation

Chinese angelica 7 don 5 fun; chuanxiong, myrrh and drynaria 5 don each; Sichuan aconite (ember-roasted) 4 don; three old coins (fire-calcined and vinegar-quenched seven times); frankincense 2 don 5 fun; costus root 1 don; yellow resin — that is, pine resin — 6 nyang; sesame oil 1 nyang 5 fun. Powder them, work them into the oil to make a plaster, spread it on oiled paper and stick it on the injured place. Where bone is shattered and sinew torn, use this and they join again as they were. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A plaster, not a pill, whatever the 丹 in the name suggests. Six nyang of pine resin and 1 nyang 5 don of sesame oil are the body of it; the drug powders — 當歸 largest, then 川芎, 沒藥, 骨碎補, ember-roasted 川烏, three old coins calcined and quenched seven times, 乳香, 木香 — are worked into that base, spread on oiled paper and stuck over the site. 骨碎補 is in it for its name, which means exactly bone-shatter-mender. The claim 用此復續如初, use this and they join again as they were, belongs to the plaster and cannot be met by it. A resin-and-oil matrix on the skin holds a dressing in place and keeps a wound from drying; it does not carry 當歸 or pyrite-quenched copper to a fracture line centimetres below, and nothing applied to intact skin accelerates callus. What it could genuinely do is hold the limb's dressing and keep the area covered — and in 1.7's own sequence, where 骨碎者 are first glued with a bone-setting drug, splinted, then dressed externally, that is the role it is actually given. **Contains aconite, which is toxic — absorbed through broken skin as well as swallowed. This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
