Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治跌傷骨節. 土鼈一箇(瓦上焙), 巴豆一箇(去殼), 半夏一箇(生), 乳香ㆍ沒藥各半分, 自然銅(火煆醋淬七次)用些少. 右爲細末, 溫淸酒調服一釐. 如重車行十里之久, 其骨接之有聲. 初跌之時, 須整理如舊, 以綿衣蓋覆, 方服藥, 勿轉動. 端午日製尤妙. 《回春》

Translation

Treats a fall that has injured bone and joint. Ground beetle, one (baked on a tile); croton seed, one (husked); pinellia, one (raw); frankincense and myrrh, half a fun each; natural copper (fire-calcined and vinegar-quenched seven times), a very small amount. Grind to a fine powder; take 1 ri stirred into warm clear wine. In about the time a loaded cart takes to travel ten li, the bone joins with a sound. At the moment of the fall the limb must first be set straight as it was and covered with a cotton quilt; only then give the medicine, and do not let the patient move. Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs in single pieces and pinches, ground very fine, of which one ri — a tenth of a fun — is stirred into warm clear wine. A ground beetle baked on a tile, one husked croton seed, one raw pinellia, half a fun each of frankincense and myrrh, and a trace of pyrite calcined and vinegar-quenched seven times. The dose is tiny, and that is the only merciful thing about the composition. The procedure around it is better than the drug. 初跌之時, 須整理如舊, 以綿衣蓋覆, 方服藥, 勿轉動 — at the moment of the fall set the limb straight as it was, cover it, and only then give the medicine, and do not let the patient move. Early reduction and strict immobilisation is correct and it is the whole of the treatment. 如重車行十里之久, 其骨接之有聲, that in the time a loaded cart takes to cover ten li the bone will join with an audible click, is not something that happens; a fracture does not unite in an hour and nothing swallowed makes it. Nor does 自然銅 — iron pyrite is poorly soluble, the iron in it is not what limits callus formation, and there is no route by which a pinch of calcined mineral reaches a fracture line. **Contains croton seed, a violent purgative and a severe irritant poison.
