Translation

Treats summerheat stroke with a hot body, vomiting and diarrhoea, intestinal flux with red or white dysentery, and dribbling urinary block; it scours accumulations and gatherings of cold and heat in the stomach, diffuses accumulated qi, frees the nine orifices and the six bowels, generates fluid, removes what lodges and binds, disperses accumulated water, stops thirst and dispels vexation, greatly nourishes the qi of spleen and kidney, and resolves the evil toxins of all drugs and of wine and food. Talc, 6 nyang; honey-roasted licorice, 1 nyang. Make a fine powder; 3 don each time, taken stirred into warm honey water, and for one who wishes to drink it cold, stirred into well water. Also called Yungil-san, Cheonsu-san and Sinbaek-san. Where there is vomiting and diarrhoea and stomach reflux from cold, add 5 don of dried ginger, and it is called Onryuk-hwan. Where there is damp heat diarrhoea, add 5 don of red yeast rice, and it is called Cheongryuk-hwan. Both are made into pills the size of a paulownia seed with cooked old rice, and fifty to seventy swallowed with plain hot water. ○ Treats sudden turmoil with vomiting and diarrhoea, and is best given stirred into ginger decoction. — Seonmyeongbang 宣明 · Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Seo, Gwallan)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs in a six-to-one ratio, and it is probably the most widely used formula in the whole summerheat literature — still sold, still prescribed, and known to most practitioners by its second name, Yungil-san, the Six-to-One Powder. Talc is a bland cooling diuretic and licorice is sweet and moderating; together they take heat out through the urine without the bitterness that would further dry a dehydrated patient. Taken in cold well water, which the source explicitly allows, it is a rehydration drink with a mild diuretic in it. The two named modifications show how the base was adapted: dried ginger for the cold case and red yeast rice for the damp-heat one, each with its own name and its own entry in the pharmacy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
