Translation

Treats damp heat diarrhoea. Igwon-san (its formula is in the Summerheat chapter), 3 nyang, with half a nyang of stir-fried red yeast rice added. Powder, make pills with aged cooked rice the size of a paulownia seed, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach in plain hot water. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Talc and licorice — the six-to-one powder, the tradition's plainest cooling diuretic — with red yeast rice added and the whole made into pills with cold rice. The name says the intent: the same base as the warming Onryuk-hwan further on, but turned to the hot diarrhoea instead of the cold one. Red yeast rice is the interesting ingredient, a fermented Monascus preparation used here as a digestive and blood mover; it is the same organism whose monacolin content made it a modern lipid-lowering supplement. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
