Translation

Treats summerheat injury with vexing thirst and diarrhoea, or sudden turmoil disorder with vomiting and diarrhoea. Talc, 2 nyang; red poria, alisma, gypsum, calcitum and licorice, 1 nyang each; white atractylodes, cassia bark and polyporus, 5 don each. Grind fine and take 2 don each time in hot water or cold, as preferred; a little honey added is better still, and a ginger decoction is best of all. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Hejian's formula, and the one place in the chapter where the pharmacy and the physiology agree with modern practice. The three cooling minerals — talc, gypsum, calcitum — are given in quantity with licorice, and the instruction is to take it in water, hot or cold, with honey permitted. Mineral salts, sugar and water in a febrile patient losing fluid by vomiting and stool is oral rehydration, arrived at six centuries before the formula was named. The cassia bark is there to keep the cold drugs from stopping the stomach, which is the tradition's own correction to the same problem. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
