Translation

Treats summerheat thirst. Calcite, talc, gypsum and trichosanthes root, 2 nyang each; licorice, 5 don. Make a fine powder; 3 don each time, taken stirred into well water. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three cooling minerals and a fluid-generating root, stirred into cold well water: of everything in the chapter this is the closest to a drink rather than a medicine. Gypsum and calcite clear heat from the stomach and the exterior, talc takes it out through the urine, trichosanthes root replaces the fluid, and licorice makes it palatable. For simple thirst in a hot, dry, feverish patient it is well constructed, and the mineral-heavy composition means it keeps indefinitely as a powder — which matters for a medicine that has to be on hand the day the heat arrives. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
