Clinical commentary 臨床

Zhang Zihe's enlargement of the sweet-dew formula, and the additions are what make it worth distinguishing from its shorter namesake: ginseng, cassia, agastache and costus, which is a whole aromatic and qi-supporting layer set on top of three cooling minerals. The reasoning fits the indication — latent summerheat with diarrhoea is damp heat in a patient whose spleen has already given way, so cooling alone would worsen it. Taken as a powder in hot water rather than decocted, which is how the mineral-heavy formulas of this chapter were usually dispensed. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
