Treats summerheat with vexing thirst, and is most wonderful for thirst after sudden turmoil. Alum, galla rhois, mume flesh and licorice, 1 nyang each. Powder, add 4 nyang of white wheat flour, mix evenly, and take 2 don each time stirred into newly drawn water. Also called Yongsu-san. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 · Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one formula in the chapter that treats thirst without a single cooling drug in it, and the reasoning is better than it first appears. Thirst after prolonged vomiting and diarrhoea is not heat but fluid gone, and the answer is to stop the loss and hold what remains: alum and galla rhois are powerfully astringent, mume is sour and provokes salivation, and the four nyang of wheat flour makes the powder into something between a drink and a gruel. Mixed into cold water it is a thickened oral rehydration preparation with an antidiarrhoeal in it, which is close to the right treatment. Alum in quantity is irritant to the stomach and is the formula's drawback. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
