Elsholtzia, 3 don; magnolia bark and hyacinth bean, 1 don 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add a little wine, decoct in water, strain and take thoroughly cold. ○ Treats sudden turmoil from summerheat stroke with vomiting and diarrhoea, abdominal pain, cramping and cold reversal of the four limbs; decoct this medicine at once and give it thoroughly cold, for no other medicine can rescue such a case. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Seo, Gwallan)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula the rest of the chapter is built on, and it is three drugs. Elsholtzia is acrid, aromatic and slightly warm: it releases the surface the way a winter exterior-resolving drug does, but it also transforms damp, which is what a summer illness in a humid climate needs. Magnolia bark opens the middle and hyacinth bean harmonizes the spleen. The two instructions matter as much as the drugs — a little wine to carry them and the whole thing drunk cold, which is how you get a warm aromatic medicine into a patient prostrated by heat. Among the most widely cited formulas in the book, and still the standard summerheat prescription. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
