Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治暑病吐瀉. 香薷三錢, 白扁豆ㆍ厚朴ㆍ赤茯苓各一錢半, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服; 或爲末, 湯點二錢服. 他暑藥皆不及此. 《直指》 ○一方, 無茯苓, 有茯神. 《局方》

Translation

Treats summerheat disease with vomiting and diarrhoea. Elsholtzia, 3 don; hyacinth bean, magnolia bark and red poria, 1 don 5 fun each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water; or powder it and take 2 don steeped in hot water. None of the other summerheat medicines comes near this one. One version has poria spirit in place of poria. — Jikji 直指 · Taepyeong Hyeminhwajegukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Hyangyu-san with poria added, and the Jijibang's claim for it is unusually blunt: none of the other summerheat medicines comes near this one. Whether or not that is so, the construction is the chapter's archetype in its clearest form — elsholtzia at three don to release the surface and transform damp, magnolia bark and hyacinth bean to settle the middle, poria to take the water downward. Four drugs and licorice, and it can be made as a decoction or steeped as a powder, which is what a formula needs if it is to be given in a hot field far from a kitchen. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
