Clinical commentary 臨床

The three-drug Hyangyu-san with seven more added, and the additions turn an acute summerheat formula into one that can be taken through a season. Elsholtzia still leads by weight and is the chapter's defining drug — aromatic, surface-releasing and damp-transforming, the tradition's specific for summer illness — while the four gentlemen and astragalus hold the qi and chaenomeles relaxes the cramping that comes with heat and fluid loss. The option of taking it as a powder in cold water is worth noticing: a hot decoction is the last thing a heat-stricken patient wants. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
