Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治感冒暑風, 身熱ㆍ頭痛, 或泄瀉ㆍ嘔吐. 香附子ㆍ香薷各二錢, 紫蘇葉ㆍ陳皮ㆍ蒼朮各一錢, 厚朴ㆍ白扁豆ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 木瓜二片, 葱白二莖, 水煎服. ○凡暑月傷風ㆍ傷寒, 悉以此藥解表發散. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats being affected by summerheat wind, with a hot body and headache, or diarrhoea and vomiting. Cyperus and elsholtzia, 2 don each; perilla leaf, tangerine peel and atractylodes lancea, 1 don each; magnolia bark, hyacinth bean and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, two slices of chaenomeles and two stalks of scallion white, and decoct in water. For injury by wind or by cold in the summer months, this medicine is used throughout to resolve the exterior and break out and disperse. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Cyperus and elsholtzia at the head, which is the formula's name and its whole idea: the aromatic qi-mover of the Xiangsu-san family crossed with the summerheat drug of the Hyangyu-san family. The Uigam's closing line is the useful one — for a cold caught in hot weather, use this rather than the winter formulas. That is a real clinical point, since a summer infection in a humid climate presents with nausea and loose stools as often as with chills, and the winter exterior-releasing formulas are too warm and too drying for it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
