Translation

Treats the lily pattern after sweating. Lily bulb, seven; anemarrhena, 1 nyang. First soak the lily bulb in water overnight — a white froth will come out — discard that water, then take two cups of well water, decoct down to one cup and strain. Separately decoct the anemarrhena in two cups of well water, take one cup and strain. Mix the two liquors evenly, decoct together down to a cup and a half, and take warm in two divided doses. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The first of Zhongjing's six lily formulas, and the set is organized by what was done to the patient before: this one is for lily disease that follows sweating. The preparation is as specific as the pattern — soak the bulbs overnight, throw away the frothy water, then decoct the two drugs separately and combine the liquors. The discarded soaking water is held to carry off the bulb's harshness, and separate decoction keeps anemarrhena's cooling action from being blunted. Sweating costs fluid, so anemarrhena at a full nyang replaces what was lost while the lily bulb settles a spirit left unmoored by the illness. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
