Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治不經汗吐下百合證. 百合七枚, 生地黃汁一升. 右先煎百合如上法, 乃納地黃汁, 煎取一升五合, 分二服. 大便出如漆黑. 《仲景》

Translation

Treats the lily pattern in a patient who has undergone neither sweating nor vomiting nor purging. Lily bulb, seven; fresh rehmannia juice, 1 seung. First decoct the lily bulb by the method above, then add the rehmannia juice, decoct down to 1 seung 5 hop and take in two doses. The stool comes out black as lacquer. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The base case of the six: lily disease in a patient nobody has treated yet, so there is no iatrogenic damage to repair and only the disease itself to meet. That makes it the purest statement of the pattern — yin depleted, blood hot, spirit unsettled — and the formula is correspondingly plain: the bulb and a seung of pressed rehmannia juice. The note about the stool turning lacquer-black is Zhongjing recording what a large dose of fresh rehmannia does, and it is worth knowing, because a patient who has not been warned will think they are bleeding. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
