Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治大便秘澁. 杏仁ㆍ枳殼ㆍ麻仁ㆍ陳皮各五錢, 阿膠珠ㆍ防風各二錢半. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 每五十丸. 老人蘇子湯下, 壯者荊芥湯下. 《直指》

Translation

Treats the stool bound and inhibited. Apricot kernel, bitter orange, hemp seed and tangerine peel, 5 don each; beaded ass-hide glue and saposhnikovia, 2.5 don each. Powder, make honey pills the size of a paulownia seed, fifty to a dose. For an old person send them down with a perilla-seed decoction, for one in full strength with a schizonepeta decoction. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

No purgative at all: two oily seeds, two qi movers, glue to moisten and saposhnikovia for the wind. The age-dependent vehicle is the formula's refinement — perilla seed, itself oily and descending, for the old, and schizonepeta, dispersing, for the strong — so the same pill is softened or sharpened by what it is swallowed with. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
