Translation

Treats the stool bound and inhibited where there is heat. Sama-tang with rhubarb and bitter orange added, milled thick as above and the juice taken. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs added to the four and the preparation unchanged, which turns a qi-moving suspension into a purgative one. Milling rhubarb rather than decocting it is unusual and consequential: the anthraquinone glycosides extract well in cold water, so a milled suspension purges as briskly as a decoction while the aromatics keep their oils. The pair of formulas is a neat demonstration that in this pharmacy the method of preparation is part of the prescription. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
