Translation

Treats heat dryness with the stool not passing. Raw rehmannia, 2 don; rhubarb roasted in dough, apricot kernel, gardenia, cimicifuga and bitter orange, 1 don each; ginseng, scutellaria and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add five slices of ginger, twenty-one fermented soybeans and one mume plum, and decoct together. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Rhubarb roasted in dough rather than used raw, which moderates it, in a formula otherwise built to cool and moisten — rehmannia leading, gardenia and scutellaria behind it, ginseng to hold the qi. The fermented soybean and mume plum at the end are the Jikji's way of keeping the stomach settled under five cold drugs. For a febrile patient with a dry bound stool it is a careful prescription. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
