Translation

Treats heat lodged in the intestine and stomach with the stool bound. Rhubarb, 1 nyang; costus root, areca and chebula rind, 5 don each; peach kernel, twelve kernels. Powder, make honey pills the size of a paulownia seed, and take fifty in warm water. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Rhubarb with two qi movers, a blood mover and — surprisingly — chebula, an astringent, in a purgative. That last is the formula's intelligence: chebula both binds and frees according to preparation, and its presence keeps the purge from running on into diarrhoea. For a habitual constipation needing repeated dosing rather than a single clear-out, that matters. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
