Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治腸胃積熱, 二便燥澁, 諸風秘ㆍ氣秘皆治之, 老人秘結尤宜. 大黃(酒蒸晒七次) 五兩, 車前子(炒) 二兩半, 郁李仁ㆍ檳榔ㆍ麻子仁(微炒)ㆍ菟絲子(酒製)ㆍ牛膝(酒洗)ㆍ山藥ㆍ山茱萸各二兩, 枳殼ㆍ防風ㆍ獨活各一兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 每五七十丸, 空心, 茶ㆍ酒ㆍ米飮任下. ○此藥專治大便秘澁, 眞良方也. 久服精神康健, 百病不生, 尤宜老人. 《得效》

Translation

Treats heat accumulated in the intestine and stomach with both passages dry and inhibited; it treats every wind constipation and qi constipation, and is suited above all to constipation in the old. Rhubarb steamed in wine and sun-dried seven times, 5 nyang; stir-fried plantago seed, 2.5 nyang; bush-cherry kernel, areca, lightly stir-fried hemp seed, wine-prepared cuscuta, wine-washed achyranthes, dioscorea and cornus, 2 nyang each; bitter orange, saposhnikovia and pubescent angelica, 1 nyang each. Powder, make honey pills the size of a paulownia seed, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach in tea, wine or rice water as preferred. This medicine treats specifically the stool bound and inhibited and is a truly fine formula; taken long it keeps the spirit sound and strong, and a hundred diseases do not arise. Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's standing prescription for habitual constipation in old age, and the preparation of the rhubarb is what makes it one: steamed in wine and dried seven times, it loses most of its purgative sharpness and keeps its moistening action, so five nyang of it can be taken daily without griping. Around it are the tonics — cuscuta, achyranthes, dioscorea, cornus — which is why the Deukhyo can recommend long use.
