Translation

Also called Jongyong-yunjang-hwan. Treats loss of the fluids with the stool constantly bound. Cistanche, 2 nyang; aquilaria, 1 nyang. Powder, beat hemp-seed juice into a paste and with it make pills the size of a paulownia seed; swallow seventy each time on an empty stomach in rice water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs, and the choice of cistanche as chief marks this as a kidney formula rather than a bowel one: the constipation is read as the fluids gone, and the answer is a warm moistening tonic. Cistanche is still used for exactly this — constipation in the aged and the depleted — and its phenylethanoid glycosides have a documented laxative effect. Aquilaria carries it downward. The hemp-seed paste means the pill is lubricated as well as the patient. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
