Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

Translation

Treats qi constipation in the old and the depleted; taken, the stool is of itself free of inhibition. Tangerine peel and apricot kernel, equal parts. Powder, make honey pills the size of a paulownia seed, and take seventy in rice water. This treats difficulty by day; if the difficulty is by night, leave out the apricot kernel and use peach kernel. — Jesaengbang 濟生 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs, and the formula's whole refinement is the note at the end: apricot kernel if the difficulty comes by day, peach kernel if by night. Apricot kernel belongs to the lung and the qi, peach kernel to the blood, and day is yang while night is yin — so the substitution follows the doctrine exactly. Whether a patient's constipation keeps hours is another matter, but as a piece of reasoning it is perfectly consistent. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
