Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸般癲癎ㆍ怔忡ㆍ驚怕ㆍ恐懼之疾. 山藥 一兩, 半夏ㆍ膽星ㆍ白茯神ㆍ白朮ㆍ黃連(炒)ㆍ遠志ㆍ酸棗仁(炒)ㆍ柏子仁 各六錢, 竹茹ㆍ天麻ㆍ白附子(煨)ㆍ川芎 各五錢, 犀角ㆍ羚羊角ㆍ白礬 各三錢半, 陳皮 三錢二分半, 全蝎 三錢二分, 辰砂 二錢二分, 牛黃 一錢二分, 麝香 一錢, 金箔 二十四片. 右爲末, 竹瀝打甘草膏和丸雞頭大, 每一丸, 淡薑湯下, 空心. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats every kind of mania and withdrawal, fearful throbbing, fright and dread. Chinese yam 1 nyang; pinellia, bile-processed arisaema, hostwood poria, white atractylodes, parched coptis, polygala, parched sour jujube seed and arborvitae seed, 6 don each; bamboo shavings, gastrodia, ash-baked typhonium and cnidium, 5 don each; rhinoceros horn, saiga antelope horn and alum, 3.5 don each; aged tangerine peel 3 don 2.5 pun; scorpion 3 don 2 pun; cinnabar 2 don 2 pun; ox bezoar 1 don 2 pun; musk 1 don; gold leaf, 24 sheets. Powder them all, beat bamboo sap with licorice paste and make pills the size of a cock's head; take one pill a dose, down with thin ginger decoction, on an empty stomach. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Four of its twenty-two ingredients are prohibited or toxic: rhinoceros horn and saiga antelope horn are CITES Appendix I and the trade in both is banned, musk is likewise Appendix I, and cinnabar is mercuric sulphide. The formula is the largest in the Spirit chapter and its construction is worth reading even so: Chinese yam and the four supplementing drugs build the body, arisaema and pinellia and bamboo shavings take out the phlegm, coptis cools the Heart, gastrodia and typhonium and scorpion settle the wind, and the minerals and animal drugs at the end are there to weigh the spirit down. 驚怕恐懼, fright and dread, is the chapter's term for a patient who startles at everything, and the formula treats it as phlegm fire rather than as temperament.
