Clinical commentary 臨床

The most famous formula in Korean medicine, and still sold in every pharmacy in the country as an emergency pill for stroke and collapse. Thirty ingredients, and they divide into three groups that do not obviously belong together: a large spleen-and-qi core led by seven don of dioscorea; the aromatic orifice-openers musk, borneol and ox gallstone; and the cooling animal horns with cinnabar and realgar. The logic is that a stroke is phlegm heat shutting the heart's orifices in a patient whose root qi is already weak, so the orifices are opened, the heat cleared and the root supported at once. The modern commercial product keeps the aromatics and the tonic core and drops the horns and the minerals — which is the right revision, since the cinnabar and realgar are the two ingredients that could kill the patient. **This must not be prepared as written.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
