Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar at two nyang and realgar at one nyang put mercury and arsenic at the top of the weight list; levigation makes the powder fine but does not make either metal safe. The rest is the complete internal-wind set — gastrodia, scorpion, silkworm, typhonium, arisaema, snake — with amber and ox gallstone for the spirit, and musk from a CITES-listed species. The indication is the one place the formula earns attention: clouding with the spirit unguarded, which is to say the agitated, plucking, half-aware state that follows some strokes, and which the tradition treated by weighting rather than by sedating. The herbal core without the metals is a recognizable formula; the formula as written is poisoning. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
