Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風中藏, 神不淸. 大黃一兩半, 桂心ㆍ芒硝各一兩, 眞珠ㆍ牛黃ㆍ靑黛ㆍ犀角ㆍ薄荷各五錢, 辰砂四錢(內二錢爲衣), 麝香ㆍ龍腦各二錢, 板藍根ㆍ貫衆ㆍ乾葛ㆍ甘草各七錢. 右爲末, 蜜水浸蒸餠和勻, 每兩作十丸, 就濕以朱砂爲衣, 再用金箔四十片爲衣. 每一丸, 如療風毒, 茶淸化下. 臘月收合妙. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats wind striking the viscera with the spirit unclear. Rhubarb, 1 nyang 5 don; cassia heart and mirabilite, 1 nyang each; pearl, ox gallstone, indigo, rhinoceros horn and mint, 5 don each; cinnabar, 4 don, of which 2 don is for the coating; musk and borneol, 2 don each; isatis root, dryopteris, pueraria and licorice, 7 don each. Powder, mix with steamed cake soaked in honey water, make ten pills to the nyang, and while still moist coat with cinnabar and then with forty leaves of gold foil. For treating wind toxin, dissolve one pill in clear tea. Compounded in the twelfth month it is best. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar is mercuric sulphide, taken here both in the pill body and as the outer coating; rhinoceros horn and musk are from CITES-listed species and illegal to trade. Set those aside and what remains is a purgative built on rhubarb and mirabilite with a cooling aromatic shell — the same architecture as Jibo-dan and Uhwang-cheongsim-won earlier in the chapter, and intended for the same patient: the one whose stroke comes with a red face, constipation and a clouded mind. The gold foil and the twelfth-month compounding date belong to the pharmacy's theatre rather than to its pharmacology. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
