Clinical commentary 臨床

The last of the five formulas for clouded spirit and the only one with no metal in it, which makes it the one a modern reader can actually consider. The construction is stated outright: Bangpung-tongseong-san — the chapter's great exterior-and-interior-draining formula — with nine drugs added, of which gastrodia and scorpion extinguish wind, rehmannia and ginseng supplement, and notopterygium and pubescent angelica reach the limbs. That turns a purgative into a convalescent medicine, and the chewed pill with tea or wine tells you it was given over weeks. Twenty-six drugs is a great many for one pill, but every group in it is doing identifiable work. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
