Translation

Treats mania and withdrawal, fright mania, and all the phlegm fire patterns; it is able to weigh down the Heart and quiet the spirit. Ginseng, white poria, parched sour jujube seed, Korean angelica, wine-parched raw rehmannia, wine-parched coptis, aged tangerine peel with the white pith removed, and ginger-processed arisaema, 1 nyang each; water-levigated cinnabar, for the coating, and bamboo sugar, 5 don each; realgar, amber, pearl and ox bezoar, 2 don each. Powder them all, make honey pills the size of paulownia seeds, coat them with cinnabar, and take fifty pills down in rice water. Wind-stirring, acrid and hot foods are to be avoided. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar is mercuric sulphide and realgar is arsenic sulphide; both are used here in quantity, and the cinnabar is also the coating, so every pill carries it on the outside. Set those aside and what remains is a coherent prescription and the most balanced in the chapter: ginseng, poria, angelica and rehmannia build the Qi and Blood, sour jujube seed quiets, coptis cools, tangerine peel and arisaema move the phlegm. 忌動風辛熱之物 — avoid wind-stirring, acrid and hot foods — is the dietary instruction, and 動風之物 covers the foods a Korean practitioner still warns a seizure patient off. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
