Donguibogam

Translation

Dongyuan says: where heat excess prevails, coptis — bitter and cold — removes heart vexation and eliminates damp heat, and is the sovereign. Licorice and raw rehmannia — sweet and cold — drain the fire, supplement the Qi, and enrich and engender the Yin Blood, and are the ministers. Korean angelica supplements the Blood's insufficiency; and cinnabar draws in the fire that floats and drifts, and so quiets the spirit light. Coptis 6 don; cinnabar 5 don; licorice and wine-washed dried raw rehmannia, 3.5 don each; wine-washed Korean angelica 2.5 don. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Sin). Note on modern practice: cinnabar (朱砂) is a mercury sulfide, restricted in contemporary practice and omitted from modern preparations.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Documented for study and historical completeness — cinnabar is mercuric sulfide, toxic and not for modern use. Contemporary practice omits it entirely or substitutes safe heavy anchors such as Yonggol and Morye; the remaining four herbs still express the formula's logic. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
