Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治一切癲癎ㆍ怔忡ㆍ搐搦難狀之疾. 祛風淸火, 豁痰調氣, 開心定志, 安神鎭驚. 大黃(酒拌, 九蒸九曬)ㆍ黃芩(炒) 各二兩, 膽星ㆍ石菖蒲各一兩, 白殭蠶(薑汁炒) 七錢, 辰砂六錢(爲衣), 靑礞石(煆)ㆍ天麻(薑汁炒)ㆍ蟬殼各五錢, 沈香ㆍ犀角各一錢半, 琥珀ㆍ雄黃各一錢, 牛黃五分, 猪心血二箇. 右爲末, 竹瀝打糊和丸菉豆大, 朱砂爲衣, 薄荷湯下六十丸. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats every kind of mania and withdrawal, fearful throbbing, and convulsive tugging and twitching beyond description. It dispels wind and clears fire, sweeps out phlegm and regulates the Qi, opens the Heart and settles the will, quiets the spirit and anchors fright. Rhubarb, wine-mixed and steamed and sunned nine times, and parched scutellaria, 2 nyang each; bile-processed arisaema and acorus, 1 nyang each; white silkworm parched in ginger juice, 7 don; cinnabar 6 don, for the coating; calcined chlorite schist, gastrodia parched in ginger juice, and cicada moulting, 5 don each; agarwood and rhinoceros horn, 1.5 don each; amber and realgar, 1 don each; ox bezoar 5 pun; the blood of two pigs' hearts. Powder them all, beat bamboo sap into a paste and make pills the size of mung beans, coat them with cinnabar, and take sixty pills down with mint decoction. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar is mercuric sulphide, realgar is arsenic sulphide, rhinoceros horn is CITES Appendix I and prohibited, and all Aquilaria species are CITES Appendix II. The formula's name is a riddle — 丑 is the ox in the twelve branches, so the Ox Treasure is ox bezoar, which at 5 pun is the smallest and most expensive item in it. What distinguishes the formula from the rest of the chapter is the two nyang of rhubarb at its head: it purges, and the chapter's own warning about epilepsy — that one must purge first and only then apply moxa — explains why. 搐搦難狀, convulsive tugging and twitching beyond description, is a seizure described by someone who had watched one. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
