Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治癲癎ㆍ驚悸ㆍ怔忡一切痰火之疾. 牛膽製南星一兩, 朱砂(水飛)ㆍ琥珀ㆍ天竺黃各五錢, 牛黃ㆍ雄黃ㆍ眞珠各二錢, 麝香半錢. 右爲末, 蜜和兩作三十丸, 金箔爲衣, 每一丸, 薄荷湯化下. 《回春》

Translation

Treats mania and withdrawal, fright palpitations, fearful throbbing, and every kind of phlegm fire disease. Arisaema processed in ox bile, 1 nyang; water-levigated cinnabar, amber and bamboo sugar, 5 don each; ox bezoar, realgar and pearl, 2 don each; musk half a don. Powder them all and make up each nyang with honey into thirty pills, coated with gold leaf; take one pill a dose, dissolved down in mint decoction. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar is mercuric sulphide, realgar is arsenic sulphide, and the musk deer is CITES Appendix I. The formula is the chapter's small, expensive emergency pill — nine ingredients, most of them minerals and animal drugs, made up in single pills and dissolved in mint decoction rather than swallowed, which is how the corpus delivers something meant to act at once. 牛膽製南星, arisaema processed in ox bile, is the standard preparation that turns a harsh acrid drug into a cooling phlegm-sweeper, and it is the one ingredient here still in use. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
