Translation

Treats the spirit taxed beyond measure so that the Heart blood is damaged, with fright palpitations and fearful throbbing, sleep and dreams unquiet, as though someone were coming to seize one — gradually becoming a Heart disease, and at worst mania and withdrawal. Cinnabar 2 nyang, boiled in 2 seung of good wine until the wine is nearly gone, two jan being kept back for use; ginger-processed polygala, acorus, parched sour jujube seed, roasted frankincense, wine-washed Korean angelica, hostwood poria and white poria, 7 don each; ginseng 5 don. Powder them all; grind one pig's heart to a paste, add the powdered medicines together with the wine the cinnabar was boiled in, stir until even, and make pills the size of mung beans; take sixty or seventy pills at bedtime, down with jujube decoction. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** Cinnabar is mercuric sulphide, and two nyang of it boiled in wine makes the mercury more available rather than less. The indication, though, is the most precisely observed in the chapter: 勞神過度, the spirit taxed beyond measure, with sleep broken by dreams of being pursued and seized, worsening by degrees into something worse. That is a description of an anxiety disorder with intrusive dreams, written by someone who had listened to a patient carefully, and it is also the only formula in the chapter whose name is its instruction — 寧志, quiet the will. The eight herbs behind the cinnabar are the chapter's standard spirit-quieting set and work without it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
